Fossil-fuel subsidies: Helping the richest get richer

Los Angeles Times -- Last week, the Senate voted on a proposal by New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez to end some of the billions of dollars in handouts enjoyed by the fossil-fuel industry. The Repeal Big Oil Tax Subsidies Act was a curiously skimpy bill that targeted only oil companies, and just the five richest of them at that. Left out were coal and natural gas. Even so, the proposal didn't pass.

But that hasn't stopped President Obama from calling for an end to oil subsidies at every stop on his early presidential-campaign-plus-fundraising blitz. And this month Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders will introduce a much tougher bill that tackles all fossil fuels and their purveyors.

"Tell a lie and tell it often enough and it will be believed." so say propaganda experts and dictators alike. BO is hoping that you won't ask too many questions, but just accept his version of reality. The "tax subsidies" about which he is speaking is, in reality, a tax deduction. This tax deduction is not just for "big oil" companies, but for ALL mining operations.

Also, by implication, you are led to believe that this will result in YOU paying LESS, because the oil companies will be paying MORE. This is another lie. Gas and oil companies will need to raise their prices and you will be paying more at the pump. Guess who will be making the extra money? You guessed it . . . BIG GOVERNMENT. BO understands this and has (IMHO) declared war on the middle (and poor) class, since they are the least able to afford any increases and many are suffering from unemployment and underemployment.

This is great rhetoric and make good sound bites for propaganda purposes, but is, in reality, a sham.

If by 'subsidies' Amplion means tax deductions, then a lot of folks will never go for that. They'll lose their home mortgages deductions.

Big oil will end up with tax payer cash either through subsidies or by charging you directly at the pump. If the subsidies end, Big oil will not take a profit cut and you will make up for it!

I think the subsidies let them charge about $ 4.00 a gallon for gas instead of the $8 or $9 a gallon they charge in Europe. I hope to God I am wrong but if the subsidies stop, I think gas will go up quite a bit !!!! I don't know about you but I don't care about the subsidies as long as a gallon of gas is affordable for me. Just think about it. The oil companies are going to win one way or another. Either the get the subsidies or we will pay a lot more for gas.

Notice how they never describe these so-called "subsidies."

This is just more platitudes for the scared politicians, hoping we re-elect their sorry selves again so they don't have to get real jobs after striking themselves rich with taxpayers' cash.

When governance is bought and paid for, you have a problem, as you no longer have a democracy.
The correct or right thing is never acknowledged, and then never acted upon; only the needs/benefits of the few, are addressed favourably, to the benefit of those few.
This activity only erodes a democracy and will evolve with increased social discourse.

Half a million oilfield workers in Texas are probably opposed to subsidies being stopped. But since they're not Union Thugs, Obozo doesn't give a rip about THEM.

From the banner on the article: Los Angeles Times--OPINION

LiberalHypocrit, nice post! Maybe "the typical "I can't think for myself" Liberal in these forums just goes along with the crowd in believing these big oil "tax subsidies" are the source of their pain and high prices at the pump." will read it and it spark some thought.

bar1035, I really liked the "bigger pool" comment. Unfortunately it will probably go over the heads of those who need to hear it most.

To those that are griping about how oil subsidies help spur production, I doubt that Big Oil really cares.

They are making plenty of cash as it is now - but it is all thanks to high oil prices.

We're subsidizing them but, like an ungrateful child, they don't bother to send any savings to the consumer. It is actually the opposite: they take and then come back asking for more.

End result: US consumers pay and pay no matter who is in office.

It's a given that obummer wants to destroy the fossil fuels industry. He needs to quit wasting taxpayer money to support his pet projects and campaign contributors and lying about why he is doing it. If subsidies are so bad maybe we should just get rid of subsidies for everybody.

I'd rather see the money go to alternatives -- yes even if it means a few Solyndras -- to help them get established -- than to companies that are well established and reaping record profits.
